Kvart Primary School
Design Philosophy
“The school today is no longer a building where we accidentally spend a period of our lives; it is a nucleus around which the life of the whole collectivity orbits.”
— Giancarlo De Carlo
School buildings as a type have been evolving since the mid-nineteenth century, consistently adapting to enhance the educational process. From simple collections of rooms to complex structures designed with pedagogy in mind, schools now serve as **open, diverse, and community-oriented spaces**.
School as a Playground
Children's first interactions with society happen in playgrounds. They **meet, make friends, learn, and create communities** through play. This project transforms the **school into a playground**, merging **education with exploration**. The design synthesizes the **spatial organization of a school** with the **fluidity of a playground**.
Structural Approach
The school consists of **four interconnected boxes**, each housing different functions. These boxes are **sewn together by a hovering belt of facilities** that serve as **shared spaces**. A **multi-use central space** hosts **collective activities** such as an amphitheater, dining area, and library.
The hovering belt on the **middle level** connects the versatile space with classrooms, acting as both a **passage and social hub**. The roof of this belt serves as an **extended playground**, providing **additional green spaces and activity areas**.
